Pay rates at Syracuse University are based on a combination of factors including, but not limited to, the job responsibilities; the candidates education, training, work experience and key competencies; the universitys strategic priorities; internal peer equity; applicable federal, state, local laws, grant funding and contractual requisites; and external market analyses.

Job Description:
As a senior member of the leadership team of the Vice Chancellor, Chief Academic Officer, and Provost, the Associate Provost for Internationalization (API) has a crucial leadership role in overseeing all aspects of internationalization at Syracuse University-including study abroad and away, research collaborations, faculty exchanges, international student recruitment and experience (undergraduate and graduate), and nonmatriculated programming abroad-building on the University's unique strengths to develop a robust global education ecosystem. The API reports to the Provost and is a member of the Provost's leadership team, Chancellor's Council, and University Leadership Team.

The API will be responsible for overseeing all study abroad and study away activities and priorities of the University, including semester-long programming, first semester/freshman programming, short-term and faculty-led programming, and the development of cohort-based opportunities at Syracuse University's 3 campuses around the US and 6 international campuses. This includes oversight of the Syracuse Abroad business unit and the operations and programs at the Fisher Center in NYC, the Dick Clark Program in Los Angeles and the Syracuse University DC Center. It also includes providing leadership for deans, associate deans and department chairs as they build curricular pathways to study abroad and away in every undergraduate degree program; building pathways for graduate program use of satellite campuses; and developing and implementing special cohort programs for hard-to-access populations including athletes, ROTC members and others.

The API is also responsible for tracking, managing and facilitating all international research collaborations, including managing all Memoranda of Understanding signed by the University. This includes reviewing all MOUs, refreshing those that are active and fruitful and retiring those that are not, and working with academic leadership to build thoughtful and effective new approaches to international collaborations. The API will work with internationally-focused research-active faculty to help build appropriate and mutually beneficial relationships with international universities.

Mindful that the internationalization ecosystem at Syracuse University goes beyond study abroad and MOUs, the API will work closely with the Center for International Services, Student Experience leadership, international academic advising in the schools and colleges, Office of the Chief Operations Officer, and others to build an unparalleled experience for international students at Syracuse University. This will give the University an important area of distinction when recruiting top-notch international students.

The API may choose to organize and lead working groups on particular topics or geographies.

The API exercises considerable judgment to problem-solve, project manage and execute on behalf of the Provost across the academic leadership team and University stakeholders.



Qualifications:
Ph.D. required. A minimum of 10-15 years of related work experience with a focus on international education and experiential learning.
Eligible for appointment as a tenured or non-tenured faculty member.
Experience working with faculty on curriculum, experiential learning, study abroad/away.
An understanding and track record of addressing the experience of international students on US college campuses.
A record of successful leadership while directing the efforts of professional staff in a complex organization is preferred.
Experience working on or facilitating international research or program collaborations.
Record of demonstrable accomplishments involving implementing strategic priorities and translating strategic imperatives into actionable plans.
A record of effective supervision in guiding, leading, & motivating individuals, working collaboratively as a member of a senior leadership team.
Track record of staff development performance & accountability.



Job Specific Qualifications:
Academic leadership experience required.
International education or experiential learning leadership experience required.
Exceptional leadership skills with a successful track record of developing and communicating a strategic vision that inspires and motivates a diverse staff.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to work collaboratively and strategically across functions, levels, and departments. Strong written and oral communication skills with the proven ability to problem-solve and effectively operate in a senior administrative role.

Responsibilities:
Leading University and school/college internationalization efforts, all use of satellite campuses in the US, and implementing the strategic objective of encouraging and enabling all students to have a study abroad or study away experience, the API is also directly responsible for:

Study Abroad:
Responsible for the programmatic, operational, and financial performance of Syracuse Abroad (SA), the Universitys study abroad program, and the Universitys international campuses in Florence, London, Madrid, Strasbourg, Santiago and Wroclaw.
Work with SA leadership to implement the vision articulated in Leading with Distinction, the academic strategic plan, building capacity in Florence and Madrid. This includes procuring and refitting a new academic facility in Florence (and possibly also in Madrid), and securing appropriate housing in all international locations.
Work with SA and academic leadership to build pipelines of students to utilizing all existing capacity in SA campuses in London, Strasbourg, Santiago and Wroclaw.
Lead expansion efforts to open a new Center in Seoul, Korea in FY26.
Lead a campus conversation, and oversee implementation of a new Syracuse Abroad center in Africa by FY28.
Work with SA to build a pipeline for new visiting students to meet capacity and drive revenue to support the academic strategic plan.
Work with the Office of Budget and Planning to ensure appropriate scale-up of staffing in study abroad locations.
Works with SA leadership and leadership at the DAniello Florence program to build out new programing for nonmatriculated students, alumni, graduate students and faculty.

Study Away:
Responsible for managing all domestic satellite campuses (DC, LA, NYC), overseeing the operating staff.
Work with leadership in the schools and colleges to develop new cohort groups in the satellite campuses.
Work with the Division of Marketing and other campus stakeholders to build an institutional identity for study away, including a fully developed web presence and marketing materials.
Work with Marketing and the schools and colleges to develop new internal marketing strategies for study away, both within schools with cohorts and between schools and colleges.
Develop and implement a plan to recruit visiting students into select study away programs, starting with the Tepper drama program in NYC and the programs at the Dick Clark Los Angeles Program.
Work with the Office of Budget and Planning to build a discounting strategy for visiting students in study away sites.
Liaise with Student Experience to meet student experience needs in satellite campuses, including housing, co-curricular activities, health/mental health needs, community standards, DEIA activities and other institutional priorities.
Work with Financial Aid to resolve longstanding financial aid concerns as they relate to study away.
Develop a vision that leverages the operational, recruiting, admissions and pre-departure infrastructure of Syracuse Abroad for the study away sites.

International Leadership:
Serve as a resource to the Provost, Chancellor and other University leadership on international relations issues as they pertain to University business.
Serve as the principal University leader for any international leadership visits to campus-academic or otherwise.
On an as-needed basis, represent Syracuse University in key international fora.
As needed, lead University delegations to international institutions with the purpose of building meaningful partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies and business communities.

Research Collaborations and Institutional Partnerships:
Review all Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), eliminating those that are either expired or inactive.
Develop guidelines for MOUs for all academic units to follow when pursuing new partnerships.
Seek out actionable opportunities for partnerships with international universities that will yield new undergraduate or graduate enrollment.
Facilitate and enable meaningful and strategic scholar-to-scholar relationships between Syracuse University faculty and faculty from international universities.
Work with the Office of Compliance to ensure all MOUs and scholarship activities are compliant with federal regulations.

International Student Programming:
In partnership with the Center for International Services, lead a campus-wide effort to build a unique and distinctively excellent student support and experience for international students in order to position the University well in the competitive international recruitment marketplace.
Work with school/college advising units to assess international student needs and expand upon innovative advising practices.
Work with Student Success and Retention, and the Center for International Services, to build unique strategies to help international students increase their academic success.
Work with the Office of the Chief Operations Officer to help meet the well-understood needs and desires of international students relative to housing and food services along with the Center for International Services.
Work closely with the Division of Student Experience, The Center for International Services, and the Graduate School to build better pathways to integration for the Universitys international student population.

Strategic Plan Implementation:
Provides leadership and expertise to advance the strategic plans at the University and school/college levels as they pertain to study away/abroad and other internationalization initiatives.
Execute on the Study Away/Study Abroad hiring, recruiting and financial plan approved by the Board.
Lead the effort to identify, acquire and renovate a new academic facility in Florence.
Oversee and advance efforts to acquire reliable, proximate, high quality and affordable student housing in Florence, London and Madrid to meet growing enrollment and demand.
Together with the Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Syracuse Abroad staff, lead efforts to build curricular pathways for study away and study abroad in all degree programs.
Work with academic leadership to build appropriate cohorts in away and abroad centers.
Ensure all elements of the away/abroad expansion are consistent with the Universitys commitments on accessibility.
Ensure all elements of the away/abroad expansion are consistent with the Universitys commitments on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Advancement:
Work closely with Advancement and External Affairs on all fundraising efforts relative to study away and abroad facilities, programs, and scholarships.
Work with Advancement, schools and colleges and the Graduate School on fundraising efforts to build scholarship opportunities for international students.
