Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position in Internal Medicine - Geriatrics. This position has a unique focus on working with Medicaid as a policy consultant to expand care and improve health outcomes in Nevada. This position also includes a clinical service component, a teaching component, and the opportunity to advance programmatic initiatives as described below.

This position will have the opportunity to contribute to UNR Med's academic mission by developing and supporting education programs for healthcare professionals to build capacity among primary care providers and other aging-care specialists. The UNR Med Sanford Center Nevada Geriatrics Education Center (NGEC) is an established program that this position would further develop, particularly for professionals serving Medicaid patients in safety-net, critical access and rural hospitals.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate mission, vision and values alignment with UNR Med, Medicaid, and Renown Health, highlighting innovation, creativity, and commitment to improving health equity and access. Demonstrated ability to communicate across a spectrum of health literacy levels to a variety of audiences, build relationships with institutions such as Federally Qualified Health Centers and managed care centers, work collaboratively in a team as well as with external stakeholders, and proactively build and improve programs or projects to expand access to clinical care and education will be pivotal to success in the role. Additionally, candidates with first-hand experience working with Medicaid that informs care, outreach, and community involvement are considered well qualified.

Duties and Responsibilities

Medicaid
  • Serve as a clinical expert and advisor to state Medicaid officials in support of improving the health of the aging population in Nevada;
  • Attend and actively participate in regular meetings with state Medicaid officials as a subject matter expert and clinical program advisor on the unique needs of the aging population in Nevada;
  • Recommend suggested program changes and strategies to state Medicaid officials that can be used to attract and retain a qualified health care workforce for meeting the needs of seniors in Nevada, including the needs of seniors living in rural and remote areas of the state;
  • Serve on any state advisory boards, committees, and workgroups, when needed, as a representative of the university in support of the state's efforts to improve the health of the aging population in Nevada;
  • Conduct academic research and literature reviews and draft summaries of research findings for state Medicaid officials in support of improving the quality of care and ensuring safe community living for Medicaid seniors;
  • Provide clinical-based reviews and policy recommendations for the state's efforts to align and coordinate benefits and care delivery systems in both Medicare and Medicaid coverage programs for dually eligible beneficiaries;
  • Review proposed and current Medicaid benefit coverage, payment and utilization management policies and make clinical-based recommendations that will improve the health of seniors covered by Medicaid, including draft policies for the state's home and community-based waiver programs for the frail elderly recipients;
  • Provide expert guidance to state Medicaid officials on the appropriate standards of care and clinical needs for seniors in the development of new programs and policies in Medicaid;
  • Develop and host trainings for other health care providers and stakeholders on best practices for delivering care for seniors in Nevada and support Medicaid's efforts to educate the public on the differences between Medicaid and Medicare with respect to coverage of services for seniors; and
  • Serve as a clinical expert advisor to state Medicaid officials in the review of certain appeals by recipients or providers in response to state denials for payment or coverage, where the core issue in the appeal presents complex clinical questions and requires the medical knowledge of a geriatric physician or background in gerontology.


Geriatrics Education and Training
  • Geriatrics education programs for current healthcare professionals to build workforce capacity among primary care providers and other aging-care specialists, through the UNR Med Sanford Center Nevada Geriatrics Education Center (NGEC), particularly for professionals serving Medicaid patients in safety-net, critical access and rural hospitals.
  • Geriatrics training and education for current medical students, residents and other health professions students at UNR Med and other health professions schools, including potential Interprofessional Education (IPE) opportunities


Outpatient Geriatric Care
  • Deliver patient care as a primary care geriatrician to increase access for Medicaid patients.


Required Qualifications
  • MD, DO or equivalent


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing service to the dual-eligible population (patients enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare
  • Experience providing care via group home visits, in-home visits, remote and/or telehealth monitoring, or other forms of innovative care delivery
  • Programmatic support for Graduate Medical Education


Compensation Grade

Academic appointment commensurate with experience

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
