General Statement:

The Director of Health Services performs complex work involved with the coordination and operation of student health services centers at Canada and College of San Mateo within the San Mateo Community College District. The Director also provides oversight for personal counseling services and assists in the implementation of Title IX requirements. Public contact is extensive and includes staff, students, other educational institutions, business and community representatives and leaders, campus visitors, and the general public. A high degree of independent judgment and creativity is required to resolve minor and major problems that arise. Consequences of errors in judgment could be costly in employee time, student health and money; however, administrative and policy controls limit the risk of serious consequences. The Director of Health Services supervises the work of faculty, classified staff, and student assistants as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current California license as a registered nurse (or ability to obtain one upon hire)
Either possession of a Masters degree or above from an accredited institution in nursing and a California Public Health Nurse certificate OR a Bachelors degree in nursing, a California Public Health Nurse certificate, and a Masters degree in health education, sociology, psychology, counseling, health care administration, public health or community health or the equivalent

Other health services personnel shall not be subject to statewide minimum qualfications; however, all personnel shall possess appropriate valid, current licensure or certification to practice in California when required by law. Ancillary personnel shall work under appropriate supervision when required by their license laws.

Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain one upon hire)
Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff
Skill in monitoring budgets and expenditures
Skill in researching, compiling data for, and preparing a variety of reports and records
Skill in training, supervising, and evaluating the work of others
Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication, including persuasive communication
A high degree of professionalism and the ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Recent successful experience in a student health services, emergency care, public health services, or health education setting
2. Understanding of and commitment to the role and purpose of the community college
3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with disadvantaged and underrepresented students
4. Knowledge of a variety of innovative health education strategies, techniques, and practices
5. Skill in oral and written communication; listening
6. Skill in persuasive communication; negotiation; compromise
7. Skill in implementing both short and long range operational plans and procedures
8. Knowledge of and skill in working under federal, state and local regulations, policies, and procedures
9. Proficiency in use of a variety of computer software and database programs related to student and other educational services
10. Knowledge of budget management and reporting; data analysis
11. Skill and ability to work as a self-starter and independent of direct supervision
12. Ability to perform accurate work under deadline pressure; skill in attention to detail
13. Ability to multi-task, be flexible, and adapt

Preferred Qualifications: A current Nurse Practitioner License An active DEA License Ten (10) or more years of successful nursing and managerial experience Bilingual
