Advance Practice Clinician - Nurse Practitioner or Physician's Assistant

Under the general direction of Medical Director for University Health Services and under the supervision of one or more physicians the Advance Practice Clinician provides health care, including acute episodic illness and/or injury, chronic disease management, and health maintenance, for patients of the University Health Service (UHS). Evaluates and treats common acute injuries and illness using guidelines and physician consultation by phone when necessary. Triages and refers to physicians any patients that require further evaluation. Provides these services for UHS patients and campus visitors.

With general supervision functions independently within the scope of departmental and institutional policies and procedures; refers exceptions to Medical Director for University Health Services.

Essential Functions

  1. Manages acute, episodic, or stable chronic Illness or injury. Takes patient medical history, performs a physical examination, and evaluates age related patient development. Orders and/or performs appropriate laboratory and other diagnostic tests, Interprets results of tests, and makes appropriate clinical judgments. Assesses physical and psychosocial health/illness status of patients. Recognizes abnormalities and brings to the attention of physicians those not covered by standard guidelines. Regulates medications and diet, provides psychosocial support and counseling. Prescribes medications following guidelines.Dispenses starter doses of medication to patients when Pharmacy is closed. Uses Universal Precautions when exposed to blood and body fluids.

  2. Coordinates all phases of patient health care, makes arrangements for outside examinations and refers patients to other health care professionals. Provides health education and teaching.

  3. Maintains working knowledge of emergency equipment.

  4. Provides functional supervision to RNs, Clinic Assistants and other support staff in the area.

  5. Keeps precise problem oriented health records.

  6. Participates in regularly scheduled department and organizational meetings, task forces, and committees. Participates in programs of quality improvement, peer review, and continuing education.

  7. Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multi-cultural environment.

  8. Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirements for Nurse Practitioners:

  1. Graduate of an accredited BS degree nursing education program or equivalent experience, plus completion of Masters level program for Nurse Practitioner.

  2. Current license to practice professional nursing, and practitioner certificate from a national nursing organization and current registration in Massachusetts.


Education Requirements for Physician's Assistants:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program.

  2. Current license as a Physician's Assistant.


Experience Requirements for all APCs:

  1. Two years APC experience, 1 year of which may be in clinical education experience.

  2. Experience in prescriptive practice in an ambulatory care setting.

  3. Experience in interpreting diagnostic tests including laboratory and x-ray results.

  4. Currently certified in basic CPR.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  1. Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment and ability to make assessments quickly and accurately.

  2. Ability to lift and transfer patients.


Additional Details
Functions with a high level of autonomy. Experience in Occupational Health and DOT Physical Certification a plus.

Work Schedule
Provides these services primarily on weekdays, but may have evening and weekend shifts. In addition to regularly scheduled clinic hours, shares Walk-in Clinic coverage and on-call responsibilities as needed to cover day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Special Instructions to Applicants
Three full-time positions available. Willing to entertain candidates who are interested in full-time 43 week positions during the academic year and 9 weeks off over the summer with pay and benefits.
